AMD have released another Athlon 64 X2 processor for Socket AM2 systems at the top of the range, eclipsing the Athlon 64 X2 6000+.

The Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Black Edition is a dual-core 90nm processor at 3.2GHz, with 125W TDP. Following AMD quietly announcing x224 dual-core Opteron processors at the same speed recently, the 6400+ Black Edition sees AMD pushing its 90nm process technology to new limits.

It's likely, although not set in stone, that the 6400+ Black Edition is the final 90nm range-topping Athlon 64 X2 that AMD will produce, with AMD moving to 65nm for its next high-end desktop processors (quad-core Agena and the dual-core Kuma) in the same socket.

The 6400+ Black Edition appears to be shipping in limited quantities depending on where you live, although it's seemingly not available in the UK just yet.
