Catalyst 7.8 released

AMD has released version 7.8 of its Catalyst driver, which brings more performance improvements to the R6xx series of chips. Lost Planet sees performance increases of up to 11% when using the D3D10 renderer with antialiasing on the 2900. The 2400 and 2600 see some increases in 3DMark 05 and 06. Standard stuff, really.

More importantly, AMD has confirmed to us that it has fixed the exploit in atidsmxx.sys that could be used to load unsigned drivers (or rootkits) in 64-bit Vista. So, if you're running that OS, you should definitely upgrade, as that's a potential security nightmare.

On the Linux front, there's now full TV-out support and a 64-bit version of Catalyst Control Center. Still no R6xx support under Linux, though...

Catalyst 7.8 packages are available for Windows Vista 32-bit, Windows Vista 64-bit, Windows XP 32-bit, Windows XP 64-bit, Windows Media Center Edition, Linux 32-bit and Linux 64-bit.
