Default Replacement for a hd 4850

My gf needs a new video card the 4850 isn't working well in win8 . She plays games like civ 5 so it doesn't have to be a top of the line. I was looking at around the $100 price point

Have you tried the Catalyst 12.6 Win8 driver that was released for HD2000-4000 some weeks ago?

I'm looking at newegg to get a grip of the prices

What about the HD 7750 or GTX 650? The HD 6770 can be gotten for 79,99 USD

Yeah a 6770 would be faster and <$100

Wed after this hurricane hits us I will go over and try the new drivers. If not a 6770 then. I see some 7770s at $100 after rebate. Is that much of a jump over the 6770 ?

It is not really a huge jump over the 6770. The 7750 is about on par with the 6770, but it really varies depending on the game.

I see the cheapest 7770 at $120 on newegg and the cheapest 6770 at $80, not taking into account rebates. The 7770 is in no way worth $40 more than 6770.

Of course the 7770 is I believe DX11.1 compliant, but I doubt that will ever matter. Probably at the most it will make about as much difference as DX10.1 made for the HD3k/4k Radeons i.e. not much at all.

Is 6850 still a better deal than 7770 ?

On older/existing games, probably yes. On newer/upcoming stuff, it seems VLIW5 might have reached the end of the driver optimization line.

It does appear that GCN does much better than VLIW in some cases. But typically 7770 seems to fall behind a bit.

One nasty case

I've too noticed that the HD 7770 is doing good in new titles(most notably BF3) since catalyst 12.11

So, what would you guys recommend out of a HD 7770 and HD 6870?
They are both in the same price range(6870 being a little more expensive), and my bro recently asked me of my opinion. He needs to replace a HD 4870 512MB, and doesn't want to pay too much.

6870 seems to always beat 7770. Sometimes by a considerable margin.

if you are looking for the 6870, also consider the 7850. the price can be really close....

650 Ti can be a decent choice,

Wow the gtx 650 makes a good showing here, but this benchmark is an anomaly.
