Ok here's a problem my brother submit to me..

He produce a lot of music, and playing them live using different Moog instruments, MPC5000, Kaossilator etc.

He have recently purchase the Moog Minitaur in addition and a good preset use are made on the software ( Windows ).

For live and studio, he was think purchase a Touchscreen ( Multitouch ) laptop. or tablet hybrid tablet/laptop for control his different softwares and applications linked to the instruments directly by the screen. ( easy to move to and to place in a live stage between the ton of instruments he use.)

Im not a specialist and never really look/use multi touch screen outside mobile devices, touchscreen. So the question, will it be able to use the touchscreen with this type of softwares ? or does it work only with dedicated software who are compatible with it ?

I know many Hybrid tablet / laptop will be out soon, he cant use an Ipad or Android tablet as thoses appliccations are only x86 / windows compatible.

I remember the HP slate with windows 7, but the use of multi touch was not really good. ( stylet better ) ..

Windows 8 is out soon who will allow more flexibility with multi touch, and cheaper laptop / hybrid tablet x86 for this type of use.


The software is an exact reproduction of the real hardware, who let you control it by mouse ( turn the button etc ), but let you launch the preset of effect and sound allready saved.

Depends how the software is written, but I imagine Win 8 should be up to the job. The main issue is how the mouse interface is handled. In some audio softsynth, the mouse click+up/down turns the controller, whereas other softsynths more accurately use a realistic turning motion. These latter sort should be a direct match.

This is one area Windows tablets interest me. The interface is ideal for complex UIs as featured in music creation.

I would directly ask the software vendor.
Also, a desktop "All-in-one" might be be good as you can get a real PC with an almost reasonable cost with a decent resolution (1600x900 or 1920x1080 rather than 1366x768 and lower)

Thanks all for your advice .. i have find for him a nice Touchscreen ( from my office, i have totally forget we got some lying somewhere ) who work really fine . ofc it will be better if you can get the same experience you can have with tablet or smartphone ( multi touch ).. surely win 8 will help on it ... But it work fine.. right now with windows 7, it replace the mice motion, so it is a bit strange at first, cause you get the feeling to move the mice cursor with the finger ( but it is fast for be used to it ) .

I agree with you Shifty, and i have speak with many software developer ( who basically develop software similar of helios for programing touchscreen on flight simulator ( DCS A10C for example) who are really interested on Win8 tablet... cause basically, you pass over the limit of iOS or Android tablet without problem. You are not tied to a specific programation, you can do it as you will do it on x86 pc system. And a tablet cost nearly the same price of a low resolution touchscreen monitor.

I dont know if when released, win8 tablet will be a real win ( money wise ), but this is for sure in the long term, something who will become the norm. Its really in the continuity of the tablet pc, but with the user experience you can find on actual tablet.
